Recycling in Charleston: A Local Guide

Charleston, South Carolina gives residents three county-operated facilities for recycling and waste disposal — two at the Bees Ferry Road campus on the west side of town and one on James Island. All three are run by Charleston County Environmental Management and require proof of county residency (a photo ID plus a current utility or tax bill).

The Bees Ferry Convenience Center at 1344 Bees Ferry Rd is the county's most full-service drop-off. Open Monday through Saturday, it accepts single-stream recyclables, household electronics (TVs, computers, monitors, printers), all battery types, CFL bulbs, scrap metal and appliances, motor and cooking oil, tires (up to 4 per visit, no commercial), yard waste in paper bags, and household hazardous waste including paints, pesticides, herbicides, and pool chemicals. It is also the only county site that accepts used gasoline.

On the same Bees Ferry Road property sits the Charleston County Bees Ferry Landfill. The landfill operates Monday–Friday 7 AM–4 PM and Saturday 8 AM–3 PM and accepts municipal solid waste ($100/ton), tires ($150/ton), and metal ($30/ton). It no longer accepts construction and demolition waste or yard debris from private or commercial haulers. An adjacent compost facility operated by McGill Environmental Systems accepts yard waste at $59 per ton (one-ton maximum) and sells compost — including a fill-your-own 5-gallon bucket for $1.

Across the Ashley River on James Island, the Charleston County Recycling Convenience Center at 1716 Signal Point Rd runs Tuesday through Saturday, 10 AM–6 PM. This is a recycling-only site: it takes aluminum and steel cans, glass, plastic bottles, paper, cardboard, electronics, CFL and fluorescent bulbs, all batteries, and used motor and cooking oil. It does not accept yard waste, garbage, construction debris, scrap metal, appliances, or propane tanks.

Residents in nearby areas of South Carolina can also check options in North Charleston, Mount Pleasant, Summerville, and Goose Creek for additional county or municipal drop-off options.
