Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to sort recyclables before dropping them off at Area Recyclers?

Yes. DMC uses a sorted system, not single-stream. Plastics, paper, glass, and cans must be separated into different bags or bins. Containers should be rinsed clean and lids removed from milk jugs before drop-off.

Can I drop off a broken refrigerator or old washing machine here?

Yes — Area Recyclers accepts large appliances by appointment only at $10 each (cash or check). Call 319-753-8126 to schedule. Appliances containing refrigerants (Freon) are also accepted through this program.

Where do I take household hazardous waste like paint, pesticides, or old TVs?

Area Recyclers does not handle hazardous waste. DMC operates the HazChem Center at 13758 Washington Rd, West Burlington (319-753-8758). Televisions can be dropped off there Monday–Friday 8 a.m.–4 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m.–noon for $15; other HHW is by appointment.
