Why EPS Is Difficult to Recycle
EPS is 95–98% air. A truck full of loose foam cups weighs almost nothing and contains minimal raw material. The economics of collecting, transporting, and processing EPS are extremely poor without densification equipment.
EPS is also easily contaminated with food, which further limits its recyclability. Most curbside programs don't accept it, and many drop-off centers can't handle it economically.
EPS Densification Programs
Foam recycling programs work by densifying EPS — compressing or melting it into dense blocks that dramatically improve the economics of transport and processing. Densified EPS is used to make picture frames, crown molding, and other plastic lumber products.
Some cities and counties operate EPS drop-off programs. Peanut-packer foam can be dropped off at UPS and FedEx stores for reuse. Alliance of Foam Packaging Recyclers maintains a list of EPS drop-off locations nationally.
What to Do Right Now
The most effective action for most households: avoid EPS in the first place. When ordering food, ask for alternatives to foam containers. Choose products packaged in cardboard, paper, or recyclable plastics instead of foam. Contact businesses that use EPS packaging and request alternatives.
For foam you already have: check the Alliance of Foam Packaging Recyclers website for a drop-off near you. Some Walmart and grocery store locations accept clean foam for recycling.
Policy Responses
Over 100 U.S. cities and several states (including California, Maryland, New York, and Virginia) have banned single-use EPS food service containers. These bans shift demand toward packaging that has better end-of-life options and are considered more effective than recycling programs for this material.
