Step 1: Back Up Your Data
Before doing anything else, back up your phone. Use iCloud or iTunes for iPhone, Google Backup or Android's built-in backup for Android phones. Photos, contacts, messages, and app data should all be saved to a new device or cloud storage before proceeding.
Step 2: Factory Reset and Deauthorize
Perform a factory reset to erase all personal data. For iPhone: Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Erase All Content and Settings. Also sign out of iCloud first. For Android: Settings → General Management → Reset → Factory Data Reset.
Also: remove your SIM card, deauthorize the device from digital content services (iTunes, Google Play), and sign out of all accounts.
Step 3: Consider Your Options
<strong>Sell or trade in</strong>: Working phones have cash value. Manufacturer trade-in programs (Apple, Samsung) offer credit toward new purchases. Third-party services (Swappa, Decluttr, Gazelle, Best Buy Trade-In) often pay cash. Even older or damaged phones may have some value.
<strong>Donate</strong>: Many non-profits accept working phones for seniors, domestic violence survivors, veterans, and people in developing countries. Phones with cameras and location services can be donated to wildlife monitoring programs.
<strong>Recycle</strong>: For phones with no remaining value, drop off at manufacturer stores, carrier stores, Best Buy, or certified e-waste facilities.
