The Future of Recycling: New Technologies

The recycling industry is undergoing a technological transformation. AI-powered sorting robots, chemical recycling, biodegradable materials, and advanced polymer identification are reshaping what's possible in material recovery.

AI and Robotic Sorting

Robotic sorting arms guided by machine vision and AI are being deployed in materials recovery facilities. These robots can identify and sort specific materials — including items that current optical sorters miss — at rates of 60–80 picks per minute.

Companies like AMP Robotics, Machinex, and Bollegraaf are deploying AI systems that learn and improve over time. Early results show significant improvements in sort purity and reduction in residue going to landfill.

Chemical Recycling

The outputs can be used to make new plastics identical to virgin material, or converted to fuels and chemicals.

Currently being piloted at commercial scale, chemical recycling has the potential to recycle plastic types and grades that mechanical recycling cannot handle. Critics note energy intensity and question lifecycle emissions, but the technology is advancing rapidly.

Digital Watermarks and Material Passports

The HolyGrail 2.0 initiative (led by major consumer goods companies) is embedding digital watermarks on product packaging that can be read by high-speed cameras at sorting facilities. This allows individual packages to be identified and sorted by resin type, color, food contact status, and other properties — far more precisely than NIR spectroscopy alone.

Material passports take this further: embedded information that tracks what a product is made of through its entire lifecycle, enabling more precise recycling instructions.

Extended Producer Responsibility

Beyond technology, policy is driving change. Extended producer responsibility (EPR) laws — which make manufacturers financially responsible for end-of-life product management — are spreading across U.S. states. EPR creates financial incentives for manufacturers to design products that are easier to recycle and to fund robust recycling infrastructure.

California, Maine, Oregon, and Colorado have passed packaging EPR laws. More states are expected to follow, fundamentally changing the economics of recycling in the U.S.
