Why Batteries Don't Go in the Trash
Batteries contain heavy metals — cadmium in nickel-cadmium (NiCd), lead in lead-acid, mercury in some older alkaline batteries, and lithium in lithium-ion cells. When crushed in a garbage truck or landfilled, these materials can leak into soil and groundwater.
Lithium-ion batteries are particularly dangerous in trash and recycling bins. They can be punctured or crushed during collection and processing, causing thermal runaway — a self-sustaining chemical reaction that can cause fires. Battery fires in waste trucks and recycling facilities are a growing and expensive problem.
Types of Batteries and Where They Go
<strong>Single-use alkaline (AA, AAA, C, D, 9V)</strong>: In most U.S. states, alkaline batteries are no longer classified as hazardous waste and can go in regular trash. However, many retailers (Home Depot, Lowe's, Staples) accept them for recycling.
<strong>Lithium-ion (laptops, phones, tools)</strong>: NEVER put in trash or curbside recycling. Drop off at electronics retailers, Call2Recycle locations, or certified e-waste facilities.
<strong>Rechargeable (NiCd, NiMH, Li-ion)</strong>: Drop off at Call2Recycle bins (found at many retailers) or household hazardous waste facilities.
<strong>Lead-acid (car batteries)</strong>: One of the most successfully recycled products — 99% recycling rate. Auto parts stores (AutoZone, O'Reilly, Advance Auto) typically accept them for free, and some pay a small core charge credit.
Preparing Batteries for Drop-Off
Tape the terminals of lithium-ion batteries with clear tape before transport and drop-off — this prevents short circuits. Keep batteries in a plastic bag or container to prevent them from touching each other.
Never store or transport damaged, swollen, or leaking batteries without special precautions. A swollen lithium battery should be placed in a sand-filled container and taken to a hazardous waste facility promptly.
